John Mayer previews forthcoming album 'Sob Rock' with new single 'Last Train Home' — listen

John Mayer has given us the first taste of his highly-anticipated eighth studio album Sob Rock

At 12 AM SGT/PHT on 4 June, the American singer-songwriter and guitarist finally unveiled 'Last Train Home', a new single that he had first teased via TikTok in March this year.

The track is Mayer's first new release as a lead artist in nearly two years, the last being his 2019 single 'Carry Me Away'

Mayer has never shied away from switching up his sound and it shows in 'Last Train Home'. Sonically, the synth-infused song is reminiscent of rock tunes from the 80s.

In an interview with Wall Street Journal, he explained his decision to adopt an 80s-inspired sound for the single and the album: "I asked myself, 'What music makes me feel like everything's going to be OK?' And it's the music I listened to growing up in the '80s. There's a security blanket aspect about that sound that reminds me of a safer time."

'Last Train Home' also features the vocals of country singer Maren Morris, whom Mayer performed alongside at the 63rd Grammy Awards earlier this year.

An accompanying music video for the song premiered on Mayer's official YouTube channel at 12 PM SGT/PHT on 4 June. The video was helmed by Midland's Cameron Duddy — who is also the mind behind the music videos for Bruno Mars' '24K Magic' and Fifth Harmony's 'Worth It' — alongside his wife, fashion and portrait photographer Harper Smith

Aside from teasing 'Last Train Home' in the lead up to its release, Mayer also took to Twitter to share the concept behind Sob Rock.

The album, which will be available on 16 July 2021, will comprise a total of 10 songs, including 'Last Train Home', 'Shouldn't Matter but it Does', 'Why You No Love Me', 'Wild Blue', 'Shot in The Dark', 'Til The Right One Comes', 'All I Want Is to Be with You', and Mayer's previously related singles 'New Light', 'I Guess I Just Feel Like', and 'Carry Me Away'.

In what is shaping up to be an exciting year for Mayer, new material is not the only thing that fans can look forward to. The 43-year-old recently announced that he will be embarking on an American tour with rock band Dead and Company this August.

"Not a day’s gone by I haven’t dreamed of being back on stage in the open air, playing the music I love among the friends I cherish," said Mayer.
