For 'Objects of Affection', throughout the month of March, the independent non-profit institution will be unveiling 20 different pieces of original artworks by 20 Singaporean artists via its Instagram and Facebook page. Each artwork will be available for purchase at the price of SGD $500, with 100% of its proceeds going into the artist development of The Substation as well as for arts education programmes and workshops.

In a press release, Yuni Hadi, Chairperson of The Substations shares: “Through Objects of Affections, The Substation brings together the works of some of our most talented as well as emerging Singaporean artists. These works donated by the 20 artists evoke the energy and spirit of The Substation, and reveal a great catalogue for those wanting to build their Singapore art collection while supporting a good cause. We’re grateful for the love and support from the arts community during this challenging pandemic time.”

The donated art pieces include the works of visual artists Ahmad Abu Baakar, Tang Ling-Nah, Vincent Leow, Oscar Ng, illustrator/artist Mary Bernadette Lee, filmmaker Sun Koh, accompanied by burgeoning artists in Shamsa Smiha Kapoor, Dylan Chan, and Sarah Lin.

Buyers who are keen on purchasing the artworks can do so by contacting The Substation via admin@substation.org or joanna@substation.org.

The Substation is also hosting their first artist walk of 2022, 'you are obviously in the right place - An Artist's Journey', taking place from the 25th of March until the 17th of April. For this edition of the artist walk, a small audience will be grouped together with Singaporean artists, such as artist-musician Nadia Ali, and arts educator, filmmaker, and author Wesley Leon Aroozoo for a guided walk.

Kicking off on the 25th and 26th with Nadia, the artist will touch base on her experiences at the start of her career, singing in bars in Orchard Road, the ins and outs of the after-hours activities, and her experiences as a woman in the music scene.

Subsequently, on the 2nd and 3rd of April, Aroozoo will be sharing insights on the inspirations of his most recent book, 'The and Punkhawala and The Prostitute'. "My novel The Punkhawala and The Prostitute explores the lives of the Karayuki-sans (Japanese prostitutes) in the 1800s in Singapore which is relatively unknown to most Singaporeans," shared the multi-disciplinary artist in a press release statement.

"With the Substation's first artist walk, I am excited to share my research and guide participants to imagine what it was like in Singapore back then as we trace the footsteps of the Karayuki-sans depicted in the novel."

Mary Bernadette Lee will helm the walks on the 7th and 8th of April at East Coast Park, with the event concluding with Sabrina Sng at the National Library at Victoria Street. To fundraise this project, an 'Adopt-A-Programme' page has been set up by The Substation on giving.sg, and donors of $120 and upwards will be acknowledged as an Adoptee of the programme on The Substation’s website.

The Substation has also hinted at more art experience events, which are set to continue on in July and November of this year. For more information on both events, head on over to The Substation website.

In 2021, Substation announced the closure of its original home at 45 Armenian Street as it made way for renovation plans. In the same year, the independent contemporary arts centre rebranded itself as 'The Substation 2.0', an arts company with the aim of advancing and promoting original programming.
