"This song is about Philippe Zdar": Phoenix release new single 'Identical', reveal Sofia Coppola collaboration

Phoenix are back with their first release since their 2018 Record Store Day single, 'Monologue'.

'Identical' made its world premiere via The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Radio on Thursday (20/8). The new track is part of the Original Soundtrack of Sofia Coppola's upcoming film, On The Rocks, starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. In true Phoenix tradition, the band will be providing the original score for Coppola's A24 release. This marks Coppola and the band's fifth soundtrack collaboration, which started with 'Too Young' in the iconic karaoke scene of Lost in Translation

The band dedicates their latest track to French touch pioneer Philippe Zdar who passed away last year. In an interview with Zane Lowe, Phoenix shared that 'Identical' was the first new song they ever worked on for their upcoming album, "This song is about Philippe. Everything about the song is Philippe."

Roman Coppola, who has worked on the music videos of 'Funky Squaredance' and 'Long Distance Call', also created the accompanying visual below:

Last July, frontman Thomas Mars revealed that there will be "new music soonish" via a Live Chat on YouTube during the live stream of the band's 2017 Paris concert. Mars also confirmed that a new album is in the works, but will take some time before its release. The forthcoming record is the followup to the French quartet's 2017 album, Ti Amo.

'Identical' is available on 7" vinyl. Pre-order it here.
