Gig Picks: August 2016

Seven months into 2016 and the number of gigs, events and festivals just seem to grow more in number. This month brings us a hip-hop festival, EDM favorites, several music festivals showcasing the best of local music, film festivals and more.

Here's what's happening this August: 

In the Mix 2016

Smart presents In the Mix, "a treat for music fans of various cliques to watch their favorite artists live and to bask into the glory of acts they have probably never heard of." The indoor music festival by MMI Live and Ovation Productions features performances by The 1975, James Bay, Third Eye Blind, Panic at the Disco, Elle King and Twin Pines. In the Mix at MOA Arena is happening on Thursday, August 18. Get tickets here

BANDWAGON TV

Logiclub Year IV

Manila-based producer collective Logiclub celebrates their fourth year anniversary at their monthly The Drop residency at Black Market. Happening on August 19, Friday, Logiclub will also formally announce the stepping down of founder Rez Toledo (Somedaydream/ Iluwin) from leadership duties, with hip-hop wordsmith Ninno taking over. The night will feature performances by Adz, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Kidthrones, Curtismith, Six the Northstar, Arthur Tan, Aries, John Pope, Direk Jorel x Some Guy and BP Valenzuela. New members and a new website will also make their premiere on Logiclub's 4th birthday. Party starts at 10 pm

Coeli: Magkaibigan o Magka-ibigan Music Video Launch

After a series of crowd-funding gigs, Coeli San Luis is finally set to launch her music video for "Magkaibigan o Magka-ibigan" together with production house Blast Off Brothers. The visual representation, directed by Noah del Rosario will make its debut on August 19, Friday at SOMA Bistro, Green Sun Hotel. The singer-songwriter and cellist will be joined by musician friends The Benjamins, Reese Lansangan, Loba y Lobos, Keifer and Tom's Story. Entrance is 300 PhP. The Chainsmokers Live in Manila

Globe presents The Chainsmokers Live in Manila. After 2 years, MMI Live brings the EDM favorites for their Manila comeback. The New York DJ duo brought their #SELFIE tour to the Philippines in 2014 at the now-defunct REPUBLIQ Club. Their 2016 return marks their first ever headlining show at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on the 19th of August. Tickets available here

Alternatrip presents: Pop Up the Volume!

The Alternatrip presents series returns for with a line up of all kinds pop imaginable - dream pop, noise pop, indie pop, pogi pop, nerd pop, pseudo-pop, folk pop, soda pop. Happening on August 19, Friday at Mow's Bar, the pop edition features performances by CiudadDragonfly CollectorSlow HelloThe BuildingsThe Strange Creatures and The Geeks. Entrance is 150 PhP and comes with 1 free beer. 

Raviver

Gabi Na Naman Productions and Vandals On The Wall are back on the gig circuit after the sold-out Dama:The Repeat. Raviver is happening on August 20, Saturday at Route 196 with performances by Ang Bandang Shirley, Apartel, BLKD x Sloj, Bullet Dumas, Johnoy Danao and Ourselves the Elves. Entrance is 250 PhP with one free drink. (Another reason to go? It's VOTW founder, Ian Urrutia's birthday celebration!)

METANOIA

Secret Fresh Gallery is hosting Tawnie Tantay's solo painting exhibition, "METANOIA" on Sunday, August 21. The exhibit opens at 6 pm with a live performance by indie rock outfit, Identikit. Secret Fresh Gallery is located at the Ground Floor of the Ronac Art Center. 

Smells Like Tropa Spirit

Smells Like Tropa Spirit, an IDIOTERNE INC. and Continent Records collaboration is happening on August 18, Thursday at 8 pm. Head down to Mow's for live performances by NeverdieRiflekidMindless PopYūreiODDJOB and Chairman Mouse. 150 PhP gets you in (plus a beer). 

Deadication

no rome recently opened for Ryan Hemsworth's Manila gig and is currently working on new material. Deadication is an audio-visual art showcase by no rome. The event will also serve as a fundraiser for no rome's upcoming album. Happening on August 19, Friday at Warehouse Eight, no rome will be joined by friends local disk c, le-an, pillow talk, moon mask, bp valenzuela, grand pricks, teenage granny and nouvul. Door charge is 200 PhP and comes with a free drink. Follow this page for updates. 

The Common Ground Music Fest

Jameson Irish Whiskey presents The Common Ground Music Fest, a one day festival happening across four different venues in Bonifacio Global City. The Red Ninja Production and Logiclub collaboration is happening on August 20, SaturdayPablo's Pub & Restaurant will host the Rock Stage, with the likes of Mayonnaise, Jensen & the Flips, Lions & Acrobats and Runway Crimes on the line up. Frank & Dean will be hosting the Singer-Songwriter Stage with Bullet Dumas, Reese Lansangan, Toni B, The Benjamins and other troubadours. St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Arms Akimbo and more will grace the DJ Stage at Tropic Frank. Speakeasy OTC will house the Hip-hop & Electro Stage featuring Shadow Moses, Earl of Manila, Ryoku, Kidthrones and more up-and-coming producers and emcees. Entrance is FREE. Full line up here.

Salad Days presents Just Kids

Don't miss the last Salad Days shows of 2016! Part I happens at Saguijo on Wednesday, August 24 featuring performances by Anton and the Salvadors, Perfect Sound Forever, The Buildings, Kapitan Kulam and the return of Boldstar (they will also be selling copies of their 2001 album "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Something/What Are You Really?"). Part II takes place at Mow's on Friday, August 26 with live music by Oh, FlamingoOurselves the ElvesThe BuildingsYūreiGirls in Dirty Shirts and Miguel and Chiko Hernandez. Bonsd St. Sessions

Head over the South this weekend and drop by Bond St. Sessions along Aguirre Ave. On Saturday, August 27 at 9 pm, the shop plays host to 'Bond St. Sessions' with live music from Gabby Alipe, Quest, Julianne Tarroja and Earl of Manila. Entrance is at 250 PhP and gives you the chance to win an Ibarra watch. 

Special Affair: girl in transit Launch Party

girl in transit, a clothing label by the same team who brought us boy in transit will be having their official launch party at Belle & Dragon on Friday, August 26. The event features a pop-up store featuring the "Hardly A Promise" collection, the girl in transit x Satchmi cap, curated Satchmi records and live music by Logiclub's BP Valenzuela, Curtismith, CRWN and Olympia. Party starts at 9 pm. 

Truefaith's 'Paano Ka Magiging Akin?' Music Video Launch

Truefaith are set to release the new music video for their 2015 single "Paano Ka Magiging Akin"? on Saturday, August 27 at 19 East. Directed by Genghis Jimenez, the music video which also features Jacq Yu and JP Koch, will make its TV premiere on MYX the same day.

Cheats 'Drunk' Music Video Launch

Cheats are set to premiere their new music video featuring their song, 'Drunk' on Saturday, August 27 at Saguijo. It's bound to be another packed night so come early (entrance before 9 pm is 200 PhP, after 9 is 250 PhP). Cheats will be joined by Ang Bandang Shirley and She's Only Sixteen

Castellations 26

UP Cast celebrates their 26th birthday on August 26, Friday at Exile on Main St. Castellations 26, a night filled with films - directed by UP Cast's very own: Miguel Hernandez, Jethro Jamon, Duane Banzon, Julie Calugcug, Raya Martin and Bandwagon Philippines' writer, Mariah Reodica (Update: The Last Gig On Earth got an Honourable Mention for the Short Feature Category at this year's Cinemalaya Gawad Alternatibo)live music performances by The BuildingsMindless PopLamb St. and Jon The Man and spoken word poetry. With Confidence Live at SM Malls

PULP Live World brings Australian pop punk four piece, With Confidence to Manila for a series of solo shows. The three-show series will take place on the following dates and venues: August 26, 2016 - SM City North Edsa, August 27, 2016 - SM City Fairview, August 28, 2016 - SM City BF Parañaque

International Silent Film Festival Manila 2016

Back for its 10th edition, the International Silent Film Festival at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall cinemas is happening on August 25 - 28, 2016. The festival will feature 10 silent films from 9 different countries and will be accompanied live by Tago Jazz Collective, Oh, FlamingoEly BuendiaDingdong Fiel feat. Miguel Ángel Lobato, Makiling Ensemble, Brass Pas Pas Pas PasBasti Artadi & Up Dharma Down. Aside from the screenings, the festival will also showcase an exhibition, lectures and workshops with international film experts including the Philippines' own, Nick Deocampo. More information here.

Is This It? Strokes Nite!

The Strokes' critically acclaimed debut, 'Is This It?' turns 15 this year. To celebrate, fans are throwing a party featuring live versions of your favorite Strokes songs by the Rusty MachinesThe SubspringCarousel CasualtiesAt The MomentThe No Name Band

Urban Jam

Random Minds brings us the first-ever hip-hop festival in the Philippines, Urban Jam. A celebration of hip-hop culture in the country, the line up features a mix of international hip-hop headliners - Mobb Deep, Skratch Bastid and Bambu, local hip-hop mainstays and up-and-coming acts - Arbie Won, BLKD, Curtismith, Supreme Fist, Red-I, Umph, Skarm and more, DJs and MCs from all over the archipelago, each one representing their home city.
